Apple ‘iPhone 5’ rumor roundup: It’s all about the screen
It’s that time again. Apple’s new iPhone is always the subject of speculation, but the buzz around the next-generation of the iPhone is getting bigger and bigger. Here are the latest rumors about the iPhone rounded up for your reading pleasure, whether you’re calling it the iPhone 5 or just the new iPhone.( Dell XPS M2010 battery )
Bigger screen: In many ways, speculation about the next iPhone is all about the screen. After all, it does make up the bulk of the phone.
It’s no secret that many people are expecting Apple’s next phone to have a bigger screen. The iPhone currently has a 3.5-inch screen, but with big-screened competitors coming from arch-rival Samsung — which is widening its global lead in smartphones — it’s likely that Apple’s going to pump up the screen size. But, since Apple is a company that prizes usability, it’s unlikely that the phone will get too big for the majority of consumers to use one-handed.
Taller screen: Is this the same as being bigger? Well, kind of. But the rumor of the day is that Apple’s next phone will gain height, but not much width. That means that it will have a profile similar to the 4.8-inch Samsung Galaxy S III, which sports a big screen, but one that still fits comfortably into your hand while talking. Alleged leaked photos of a new iPhone were posted at the Web site Apple.pro showing a slimmer, taller profile with two phones.( Dell CC384)
Better screen: Yes — another screen rumor — this time from the Wall Street Journal, which published a report Tuesday that the next iPhone’s screen will have a better display quality and will also be thinner, depth-wise, thanks to a type of screen technology that integrates the touch sensors into the LCD panel itself. The upshot of this is that Apple doesn’t have to add a touch layer onto the screen, which cuts down on screen thickness as well as the overall thickness of the whole device.
In a happy move for Apple, such a screen would also cut down on the number of suppliers the company needs to employ.
NFC: Moving on to non-screen rumors, rumor has it that the iPhone will have a near-field communication chip, or NFC chip, which will let users send data between phones quickly and may also act as a virtual wallet. According to 9 to 5 Mac, the technology could mean an Apple version of Google Wallet or a serious expansion of Apple’s payment processor role using the iTunes store.
The inclusion of an NFC chip was a persistent rumor ahead of the iPhone 4S launch, but one that’s been given new legs thanks to Apple’s introduction of Passbook. The Passbook service lets users store their loyalty cards and tickets. The iPhone’s main competitor, the Samsung Galaxy S III, has NFC capabilities — one of the phone’s central selling points.(Dell 451-10372)
Dock connector: TechCrunch reported that it has “confirmed” that Apple will be ditching its familiar 30-pin dock connector in favor of a 19-pin connector in the next model. The report, which cited unnamed manufacturers, said the new connector is about the size of a Thunderbolt port. A smaller dock connector means more room in the phone — or more potential to make the phone thinner and lighter — but would wreak merry havoc with the very successful iPhone accessory market.

Dell’s results may be good news for H-P
SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) — Dell Inc.’s shares headed south Wednesday on results that raised doubts about the PC maker’s ability to consistently grow profits while chasing higher-margin businesses.
But the earnings report from Dell (US:DELL) also suggests that the hard disk-drive shortage that has hurt the computer market may not be as severe as many feared. One analyst said that bodes well for Hewlett-Packard Co. (US:HPQ), which is scheduled to post its own results after the closing bell Wednesday.
Dell shares were last trading down about 6.4% at $17.04. H-P shares were last down about 1.4% at $28.94.( Dell Vostro 3350 Battery )
Late Tuesday, Dell reported results for the quarter ended in January that slightly missed Wall Street’s estimates. The company also issued a revenue outlook that fell below expectations. Read full coverage on Dell's earnings.
Dell’s numbers pointed to problems that also affect H-P, including a struggling U.S. public-sector market and lackluster consumer demand. But the hard disk-drive shortage did not have as big an effect as many had speculated.

“Dell beat PC revenue expectations, meaning they were able to purchase all the hard disk drives they needed,” ISI Group analyst Brian Marshall wrote MarketWatch in an email. “I think H-P’s guidance assumed they wouldn’t be able to purchase all the drives they would need for the quarter. I think they were able to purchase them.”
However, Bernstein Research analyst Toni Sacconaghi said it was unclear “how much of its hard disk-drive issues were company-specific.”
He wrote in a note that PC makers Acer and Lenovo passed on higher disk-drive costs to customers, noting that both of those companies also gained share from “white box,” or unbranded, PCs.
”Our field checks suggest that H-P responded very differently than Dell to hard disk-drive supply issues by raising prices on transactional sales and discontinuing low-end products, which appears to have translated into notable share loss,” Sacconaghi added.( hp Presario V6500 Battery )
Dell did say that the company didn’t get enough supply of higher-end capacity drives, limiting its ability to make and sell higher-end PCs. That is a problem for a company that’s been trying to push deeper into higher-margin segments by de-emphasizing its lower-margin businesses.
Those efforts have paid off, as Dell’s improved profit margins have won praise on Wall Street, where the stock had jumped roughly 24% since the first of the year before Tuesday’s report.
Dell’s report quickly sparked a debate on what it means for the Round Rock, Texas-based company’s push for greater profitability.
“That’s all folks,” Needham analyst Richard Kugele quipped in a note, as he downgraded the stock to hold from buy. “It’s been an impressive run year to date for Dell, rising over 24% and surpassing our $17 target as the fundamental improvements in its business mix were gradually recognized by investors.”

HP's Good-News, Bad-News Day: New Contract with NIH, but 9,000 Layoffs Loom
Hewlett-Packard had two widely differing news stories on June 25 -- one good and one not-so-good.
The IT hardware, software and services giant announced that it has landed a 10-year Indefinite Delivery Indefinitely Quantity (IDIQ) contract to supply various software and data center-related services for the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md. This is a project that will cap at $20 billion for all contract awardees over that span of time.
HP, the world's largest IT company by revenue, is expected to earn a substantial portion of that $20 billion.( Dell Inspiron 6400 Battery )
Layoffs to Start Soon
On the other side of the news, it was revealed that HP will begin executing layoffs following its May 23 announcement that it will cut about 8 percent of its workforce by July 2014.
The layoffs are part of a companywide effort to save between $3 billion and $3.5 billion per year in operating expenses. HP actually announced its first round of layoffs last September in its webOS division.
The first one-third of the new job cuts -- 9,000 employees of the estimated 27,000, and all in the United States -- will receive their dreaded official notices in the next few weeks. Most of the jobs lost will be in the company's services division, which came to the company in the Electronic Data Systems acquisition in 2008.( Dell Studio XPS 13 Battery )
HP bought EDS, founded in 1962 by H. Ross Perot, that year for $13.9 billion. HP also will be trimming about 8,000 jobs in the 27-country European Union.
The Palo Alto, Calif.-based conglomerate currently employs about 349,000 full-time staff members. HP's staff reduction is intended to preserve the long-term health of the company, CEO Meg Whitman has said.
More Detail on the NIH Contract
HP will provide IT services to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' National Institutes of Health Information Technology Acquisition and Assessment Center (NITAAC) to provide technology services to federal agencies under the Chief Information Officer -- Solutions and Partners 3 (CIO-SP3) contract.
Under the contract, HP and its team of small business partners can compete for individual task orders from federal agencies to address new and emerging IT requirements, including but not limited to data center consolidation, cloud computing, health IT, mobility and cyber-security.

Dell W0465,Asus Notebook Will Integrated Pico projector

Projector become a popular device in offices and schools to project video, pictures, or data from a computer onto a screen. If you are working to move, then you can do the job perfectly at the office or conference room with a portable projector. Sometimes bring their own portable projector is not simple, therefore a laptop or a smartphones integrated with projector highly desirable.
Asus recently has filed a patent for a notebook with built-in projector. If we look at design, location the projector is not very convenient because it is placed in the hinge, and we have to put the notebooks with the vertical surface of the table. While the second design looks quite comfortable because the notebook was designed to have the projector on the side of the screen.( Dell Inspiron 1525 Battery )
Asus is not the first designed notebook with a projector because already existed Fujistu Lifebook notebook with Pico Projector. Here the projector is placed in the slot for the optical drive but unfortunately removing the optical drive and replaced with a projector. Asus laptop design allows to add a projector without removing other components so that the component is really a complete laptop for multimedia support.
Although the patent has been published but usually this is not in the near future prototype or product truly realized and come quickly to the market.
Asus Unveils Slimline U46 Notebook(Dell W0465)
Asus has announced a new notebook that may not have Ultrabook credentials, but it still manages to cram some decent specs into a rather slim chassis.
The Asus U46 notebook is a 14in laptop encased in a slim chassis less than 25mm thick. That chassis is fashioned from durable spun aluminium and brushed “champagne-coloured metals.”
The 14in display is 5.5mm thick and has a resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels with a slim bezel surround and a “hinge-forward design” which promises better viewing angles.
The U46 features second generation Core i3 or i5 processors, integrated Intel or discrete Nvidia GeForce GT540M graphics, up to 8GB RAM, 1GB of video memory, and a promised battery life of 10 hours.
There is also a DVD drive, 4-in-1 card reader, 0.3 megapixel webcam, Bluetooth 3.0, Wi-Fi, USB 3.0 port, 2 x USB 2.0 ports and a HDMI port on offer.
The U46 weighs in at just over 2kg and also includes the exclusive Asus USB charger system allowing users to quickly recharge USB-powered devices in a fraction of the time it normally takes – though what this will do to the laptop battery is probably not worth thinking about.

Dell aims to create $5 billion software business
SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Dell Inc's new software chief plans to increase the size of the business five-fold, a target that could eventually account for at least 25 percent of the No. 3 personal computer maker's profits.
John Swainson, the former chief executive of CA Technologies who joined Dell in February, said software is a higher margin business than most of the company's other units, but is not big enough to make a difference right now.
Dell has been actively diversifying its products and business away from personal computers, a market whose growth is slowing as Apple Inc's iPad and other mobile devices pull customers away. The company has said it sees software and services as key growth areas.(HP NC8200 battery)
Swainson wants Dell's software business to make a "meaningful contribution" to its bottom line.
"As you get to a number like $5 billion, it starts to become a meaningful number on the bottom line," he told Reuters in an interview. "If you were at $5 billion software business with 30 percent margins, that would be roughly $1.5 billion in net income."
Dell's software business currently generates about $1.2 billion of its $60.2 billion annual revenue.
Swainson did not give a time frame for when he hopes to achieve the target revenues, but said the $2.4 billion acquisition of Quest software was one of the building blocks to getting there.
Software is one part of the Round Rock, Texas-based company's strategy to transform the corporation from just a PC company to a one-stop shop for all the IT needs of corporations.(HP 8510w battery)
But the company has been lagging larger rivals such as Hewlett-Packard Co and International Business Machines Corp in the race to become the preferred vendor for corporate information technology needs.
Acquisitions that broaden its offerings, such as IT services company Perot Systems and security company SonicWall, have underpinned Dell's diversification plan.
Dell, however, is not planning to buy any more software companies of Quest's size in the near-term, but will continue to "actively" look for good buys, Swainson said.
The company is also focusing on emerging markets for growth. Chief Executive Officer Michael Dell said earlier this week he remains upbeat about areas such as China, its largest market outside the United States, despite "challenges" and a business slowdown.

Acer Projectors for Education: learning becomes interactive
Preparing 21st century students for real world challenges requires the use of sustainable technology to help improve their academic achievements. Acer goal is to assist educators and administrators in improving the learning process providing them with innovative and interactive solutions. The key features that are necessary for schools have now been integrated into the Acer projectors specifically dedicated to the world of education to help creating a compelling learning environment.
The range of Acer projectors for Education completes the series of devices (netbooks, Interactive Whiteboard, personal computers and Acer Classroom Manager Software) that Acer has developed to provide a unique and integrated solution for schools, a complete set of instruments to enable 2.0 teaching.( Dell CF623 Battery)
Specifically developed for the educational segment, Acer offers a series of short and ultra-short throw distance projectors; this means clear images can be displayed even if the projector is placed very close to the screen. At a distance of just 1 meter the S5200 and S5201M projectors can display sharp and accurate images with a diagonal of up to 205 cm (81”). Thanks to this feature presenters can avoid projector beams in the eyes and don’t cast shadows on the screen during their presentations. As a result these projectors offer greater flexibility and maximum viewing comfort, making them ideal for education scenarios.
To complete the portfolio Acer will introduce shorthly U5200 projector, featuring the advanced mirror-reflection system of ultra-short throw projection. With this kind of projection even at a throw distance of just 13 cm (rear side to the wall), highly detailed images can be displayed at up to 77", that is the size of a standard interactive whiteboard, allowing even greater flexibility. Together with Acer Interactive Whiteboard, these projectors make an excellent all-in-one solution.(Dell Latitude D830 battery)
What’s more all Acer projectors for education can transform any lesson into a stunning 3D experience. The three-dimensional experience is made possible by DLP 3D Ready technology that, using high (120 Hz) refresh rates, can transform the flat surface of the display into a 3D screen. The possibilities unlocked by this simple solution are limited only by our imagination: exploring the incredible human anatomy or the universe in 3D detail; touring famous archaeological sites just like being there.

OLYMPIC PERFORMANCE
Taiwan-based Acer, which ranked fourth in PC shipments in the first quarter, has had its own problems after failing to adapt to changes in the market including in particular the rise of Apple's iPad last year, but Ahrens said the group was now getting back on track.(Dell Latitude D830 battery)
He said Windows 8, which does not yet have a launch date, was "extremely important" for Acer, and it would have four or five devices tied in with its launch, including tablets and a high-definition slimline "Ultrabook" notebook.
Ahrens said the new products would be supported by an advertising campaign focused on the user experience rather than the specifications of the machines, which has been the traditional approach of PC makers.
"Acer wants to be more about value than volume," he said, adding that the company needed to do higher end products to lift the status of the whole brand.
Acer, an Olympics sponsor, will also be in the spotlight next month as the PC provider to the London games.( Dell CF623 Battery)
"Everything is run by Acer - the scoring systems, the internal IT," said Acer UK managing director Neil Marshall. "It will demonstrate that we have the commercial ability to deliver this type of project."
Ahrens said the second quarter, which ends in nine days, would see about a 50 percent rise in revenue in the Europe, Middle East and Africa region, as the group continued its recovery from the lows of a year ago.
The region accounted for 37 pct of revenue in the first quarter, according to a company presentation.
"Q3 will be more challenging because it's a transition quarter from Windows 7 to Windows 8," he said.

ASUS ROG Vulcan PRO Gaming Headset Delivers Game-Winning Focus
Custom-designed for pro-gamers, the new product ships with the exclusive ROG Spitfire USB audio processor and advanced dual noise cancelling technologies(laptop)
Better in-game sound with the exclusive portable ROG Spitfire USB audio processor
Following extensive consultation with professional gamers, the ROG team decided to further add to the original ROG Vulcan ANC headset with even better portability and augmented tournament-focused features. The ROG Vulcan PRO therefore adds the ROG Spitfire USB audio processor, which works at the hardware level and requires no driver install. Its design contributes to quicker setup in gaming events, and complies with the most professional venues, which prohibit the installation of additional drivers. The ROG Spitfire is the world’s only hardware digital signal processor in the PC gaming category to offer such driver-free convenience.
Three instant-activation audio enhancement modes
The ROG Spitfire provides gamers with easy-reach access to game-enhancing sound technologies: FPS EQ for better audio positioning in first person shooters, 7.1 virtual surround, and headphone amplifier. Each has a dedicated one-click on/off button, with no need to enter any software interface. FPS EQ has been developed by analyzing the audio characteristics of several leading first person shooters, with advanced sound algorithms built into the hardware to improve equalization and bring out details with better clarity. Gamers can hear opponent movements, gunfire, call-outs, and other auditory cues with better directional precision, contributing to successful play. The 7.1 virtual surround mode presents lifelike and distortion-free in-game surround. Its design optimizes surround effects originally not programmed specifically for games, resulting in more natural and balanced enveloping in-game audio. The ROG Spitfire’s integrated headphone amplifier features ROG engineering that boosts in-game sound detail, and has been tailor-made to match the tonal performance of ROG gaming headsets, as opposed to off-the-shelf headphone amplifiers.(Dell Studio 1536 battery)
Dual noise cancelling technologies for noise-resistant gameplay
Noise ranks as one of the leading issues for pro-gamers, often causing distractions and leading to the wrong decisions – which in turn lower win ratios. The ROG Vulcan PRO features brushed metal headphone side covers that offer a new style as well as better strength. It offers gamers active and passive noise cancellation, meticulously designed by ROG engineers to ensure improved gaming success and immersion. Active noise cancellation filters out low frequency emitters such as PC fans, with up to 85% of noise blocked. This is the world’s only active noise cancellation technology created specifically for gaming. Additionally, passive noise cancellation isolates up to 30dB of high frequency disruptions such as environmental noise and human voice, two of the main noisemakers in gaming events. That much noise elimination can practically make busy LAN parties library-quiet, so gamers gain better focus whatever their field of play.

Will H-P bottom out any time soon?
NEW YORK (MarketWatch) — A lot of tech investors are watching Hewlett-Packard Co. closely, waiting for it to bottom out. The question is whether it ever recovers once it hits bottom.
I was a big fan of H-P (US:HPQ) until Carly Fiorina became the chief executive and began a series of missteps that continue to this day, starting with the purchase of Compaq computer.
The last dumb move was the company’s purchase of Autonomy, a odd U.K. software company that seems to specialize in the creation of screwball corporate cliches using the word “meaning” as the cornerstone.
For example, they engage in “meaning-based computing” and “meaning-based governance” and “meaning-based marketing.” I hear H-P is looking for someone to run the operation. How about Werner Erhard or Deepak Chopra?
The company employs “pan-enterprise search” to do “eDiscovery.” Cripes! It should become an ad agency with all this blather.
Apparently Leo Apotheker, former H-P CEO, was enamored with this company and spent most of the H-P cash reserves (over $10 billion) to acquire it.
That was the end of him. Now we have Meg Whitman, would-be governor of California, running the place.
The problem with H-P is that it is still a good company. After Whitman fires another reported 27,000 people, which can never be done judiciously with that many people involved, I don’t know if it can recover without a visionary at the helm.
Whitman has shown no indication of being anything more than a functionary. This is not going to improve the fate of the stock and until something inspirational comes from the company the stock will continue to crater.

Sharp will pay a total of $198.5m to Dell

Sharp will pay a total of $198.5m to Dell and two other companies as the Japan-based technology company reached an out of court settlement over its thin-film-transistor (TFT) business.
It's not clear from initial reports who was involved in the suit involved bar the two named, or even what the suit pertained to.
AT&T and Nokia both sued Toshiba a few years back and remain likely the two unnamed companies paid in the settlement.
However, the news likely relates to last week's news that Toshiba, Samsung, LG, and Sharp colluded to fix prices of LCD panels.
Sharp said after "comprehensively considering the American civil justice system," it had settled as "the best possible course of action," according to The Verge.
Last week, Toshiba was ordered to pay $87m in damages for allegedly fixing the prices of LCD panels. U.S. officials claimed the conspiring parties met in secret in karaoke bars, hotel conference rooms, and even tea rooms in Taiwan.
"Toshiba has consistently maintained that there was no illegal activity on its part in the LCD business in the United States, and Toshiba continues to hold that view," a statement from Toshiba said.
Both Sharp and Dell were unavailable for comment. Questions have been emailed to both companies, and if we hear back then updates will be added here.

It was bought by HP last year for more than $10bn.

The company said the cuts - about 8% of its workforce - will reduce costs by up to $3.5bn (£2.2bn) a year.
HP said in a statement that the money would be reinvested into the company.
The move was part of a "productivity initiative designed to simplify business processes" and comes as rival products such as the iPad tablet computer eat into HP's sales.
As part of the changes, the head of HP's Autonomy division, Mike Lynch, is being replaced by Bill Veghte, HP's chief strategy officer. Mr Lynch will leave after what HP called a "transition period".
Mr Lynch founded software company Autonomy as a small start-up and turned into one of the UK's largest technology companies.
It was bought by HP last year for more than $10bn.
HP employs about 350,000 people worldwide and about 20,000 in the UK. A spokesman said it was too early to say exactly where the job cuts would hit, but no part of the business would escape some losses.
"We have not yet announced specific plans with regards to specific locations. We do expect the workforce reduction to impact just about every business and region," the spokesman said.
News of the job losses overshadowed the release on Wednesday of HP's latest quarterly results. The company's profits and revenues were both better than analysts had estimated.
California-based HP reported a 31% fall in profits in the second quarter to $1.6bn. Revenue in the period fell 3% on a year ago to $30.7bn.
Meg Whitman, HP's chief executive, said: "This quarter we exceeded our previously provided outlook and are executing against our strategy, but we still have a lot of work to do."
The former chief executive of eBay joined HP in September, vowing to turn around the company after a series of problems including a failed tablet computer and an announcement that it was considering an exit from the PC business.
Her predecessor, Leo Apotheker, was ousted after just 11 months on the job.
HP's shares, which fell as much as 5% on Wednesday and closed 3% down, were up 6.6% in after-hours trading on Wall Street.
